Kate explained that her mystery series, about a female botanist in the 19th century (order A BOTANIST’S GUIDE TO TRADITION AND TREACHERY) was marketed as feminist, and she talked about how many women scientists and researchers were erased from history because of their lack of dangling genitals. (She didn’t say that last part, I’m improvising.)

My hand shot up. John handed me the microphone. I said, “When I was in drafting school, one of the male students told me he didn’t approve of women in the drafting room because they wore short skirts and distracted the men from their work.”

Seventeen people came on a Monday night! Weather: no ash from wildfires, sunshine, perfect temps. Krysti Meyer interviewed me ruthlessly. 😁 Everyone was such a reader! They bought multiple books and so many of them had already read A DAUGHTER OF FAIR VERONA and THUS WITH A KISS I DIE, and were able to ask insightful questions. One reader drove two hours to get to the autographing, brought 20-ish of my historical romances for me to sign, and praised me so much my “modesty” was dented. (Refer to the Poisoned Pen signing “Biggest Laugh.”)

Destination Bookstore:
Old house stuffed with books, well-organized, staff that read and had recommendations, basement full of children’s and YA, and for a special bonus, book-related miniatures set into cupboards of varying sizes, created by Lisa, the events coordinator. I was able to photograph them behind the glass.
